Functions

The Ministry is made up of two technical departments, namely: Livestock Production and Veterinary Services and three Parastatals:


The Livestock Production Department has several Divisions whose functions are as follows:

  1. Animal Production which focuses on dairy and beef, sheep and goats, small and non-ruminants, livestock feeds and breeding.
  2. Range Management which offers services in pastoralism and ranching, rangeland resource monitoring and camel production.
  3. Livestock Marketing which is responsible for livestock information management and livestock market coordination
  4. Extension Services which takes care of extension management, gender equity mobilisation, extension information and publications, research extension liaison and food security.
  5. Apiculture and Emerging livestock which is responsible for offering services in beekeeping, quality assurance of bee products and emerging livestock.
  6. Monitoring and Evaluation which is in charge of project planning and policy development and monitoring and evaluation of the projects.
  7. Training which is responsible for staff training and human resource development.

The Veterinary Services Department is divided into Divisions whose functions are as indicated here below:

  1. Veterinary Disease Control, to control and eradicate epizootic notifiable diseases in collaboration with stakeholders, facilitate and regulate trade in animals and animal products.
  2. Vector Control, to control and eradicate vectors such as tsetse and ticks in collaboration with stakeholders.
  3. Veterinary Laboratory Services, to undertake disease diagnosis, epidemiological surveys quality assurance of veterinary inputs, and acquire, test and adopt new technologies.
  4. Veterinary Epidemiology, Surveillance and Economics, to undertake disease surveillance
  5. Veterinary Public Health, to ensure safety of food of animal origin
  6. Veterinary Training and Clinics, to undertake human resource development
  7. Artificial Insemination Services, to regulate the provision of A.I. services
  8. Veterinary Extension, to provide extension services
  9. Veterinary Project Management Support Unit, to coordinate project planning, monitoring and evaluation
  10. Veterinary Administration and Management Support Services, to provide support services.
Parastatals
The parastatals in the Ministry include the Kenya Dairy Board (KDB), which plays a regulatory role for the milk sub-sector; Kenya Meat Commission (KMC), which processes meat and meat products for local and export markets; and the Kenya Veterinary Vaccine Production Institute (KEVEVAPI), which conducts research on Veterinary Vaccine.
