Laboratory Services and Veterinary Farms

The veterinary laboratory service was started in 1910 to support livestock disease control through research and diagnosis of animal diseases. The services were offered free until mid 1990 when cost-sharing was introduced. To date there are two national referral laboratories at Kabete and Embakasi, which also serve some neighboring countries for laboratory diagnosis. There are other six regional laboratories which are strategically located at Nakuru, Kericho, Eldoret, Karatina, Mariakani and Garissa to serve the respective regions. In addition, there are two active satellite laboratories situated at Ukunda and Witu to back up the Mariakani Regional Laboratory and other three inactive laboratories at Lodwar, Sotik and Isiolo which the department intends to re-activate.

There are also plans to establish three satellite laboratories at Rongo, Maseno and Transmara and rehabilitate/establish district laboratories where laboratory services are out of reach.
