Veterinary Epidemiology, Surveillance and Economics

The department has an epidemio-surveillance network covering most parts of the country. The main objective is to collect disease information for early warning and reaction. This system was established and funded under the PACE- Kenya project which ended in October, 2006. The system comprises of both passive and active surveillance. It also has an animal health database that is GIS compatible and captures disease information at the national and provincial levels. It also generates monthly reports for AU-IBAR and quarterly reports for OIE. The system is critical for creation of disease free zones and eradication.

Under the PACE programme, the system has enabled the country to be internationally certified to be free of Rinderpest disease on zonal basis. A dozier has been presented to OIE to attain freedom of disease on country basis. More surveillance activities need to be carried out during the strategic plan period in order to complete the OIE pathway and attain freedom of infection from Rinderpest virus. The department also undertakes surveillance for other notifiable diseases such CBPP, HPAI, RVF amongst others and is working towards an integrated disease surveillance system. The livestock economic section routinely conducts socio-economic investigations as a planning basis for animal health control programmes.
