THE DEPARTMENT OF LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION
Background / History
- The Department of Livestock production was established in 1983. Prior to that (since 1903), it was a division in the then Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Water Resources comprising the following sections: Range Management, Animal Production and Livestock marketing.
- The Department remained so until 1987 when further re-organization of the then Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Marketing gave birth to a fully fledged Department of Livestock Production with expanded mandate covering Extension Services, Training and Development, and Project Monitoring and Evaluation. Later on the Apiculture and Emerging Livestock division was created from Animal production Division in 1996.
- In 1998 the Department was merged with the Department of Agriculture to give rise to a new Department of Agriculture and Livestock Production under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. This arrangement remained until 2003 when the current Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development was formed.
