To be a regional leader in all technical maters related to apiculture and emerging livestock technologies for a sustainable and flourishing apiculture and emerging livestock sub-sector.

Mission
To promote the development of a sustainable beekeeping and emerging livestock industries; through appropriate beekeeping and emerging livestock technologies.

Mandates
In line with the current duties and responsibilities assigned by the Director of Livestock Production, the functions and mandates of the Apiculture and Emerging Livestock Division are defined as:

a) Technical guidance on formulation implementation and monitoring of apiculture and emerging livestock policies;
b) Development, implementation and coordination of beekeeping and emerging livestock programmes/projects;
c) Regulatory management, quality control of hive products and equipment;
d) Research agenda setting, liaison and coordination in apiculture technology development;
e) Promote production, marketing and utilization of hive and emerging livestock products;
f) Collection, analysis and management of apiculture and emerging livestock based information;
g) Surveillance and monitoring of production trends of hive and emerging livestock products;
h) Priority setting in api-forestry and conservation of the natural resource base;
i) Provision of technical guidance on all aspects of beekeeping

Strategic Objectives
a) To provide technical advice on policy guidelines, rules and regulations related to apiculture and emerging livestock for sustainable productivity;
b) To facilitate growth in the market access for the sub-sector products by promoting exports and information dissemination;
c) To increase output of hive and emerging livestock products through improved efficiency in the management of apiaries and emerging livestock production systems.
d) To build capacity at all levels on beekeeping and emerging livestock technologies including value addition;
e) To ensure quality and standards of equipment, hive and emerging livestock products;
f) To promote collaboration with stakeholders in the apiculture industry, foster partnerships and formation of beekeeping groups;
g) To improve documentation, management and dissemination of information;
h) To identify and select more docile and productive bee colonies through selective breeding:
i) Promote improvement of bee equipment through appropriate designs and applied research;
j) To provide for the continuous development of staff.
