Emergency intervention to mitigate the effects of drought.

Following the severe and prolonged drought resulting from the La-Nina weather phenomena which led to suppressed short rains from October 2010, the Ministry of Livestock Development has further been allocated funds for emergency interventions to mitigate the effects of the drought. The interventions to be implemented are emergency livestock off-take through the District Steering Groups (DSG) and livestock health/disease control.The interventions are complementary to other efforts being undertaken by other agencies. The Ministry was allocated Kshs.189 million for livestock off take. So far, Kshs.177, 500,000 has been released to the District Steering Groups for purchase of weak animals to be slaughtered and distributed as relief food.
